As both a healthcare provider and a mom, I’m getting a firsthand reminder this week of how tough RSV season can be. My own children are currently battling RSV, and it reminded me how helpful it is for parents to understand what this virus is and how we support kids through it.
RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) is a very common respiratory virus that affects the lungs and airways. Almost all children will have RSV by age two. It often starts like a cold but can cause more breathing symptoms, especially in infants and young children.
Common symptoms include:
• Runny or congested nose
• Persistent cough
• Fever
• Wheezing
• Decreased appetite
• Irritability or fatigue
Because RSV is a virus, antibiotics do not treat it. Most care focuses on supportive therapies that help the body recover while easing symptoms.
Helpful supportive measures include:
✔ Fluids and hydration
✔ Rest
✔ Humidified air or cool mist humidifier
✔ Nasal saline and gentle suctioning for infants
✔ Fever control when needed
✔ Monitoring breathing closely
🚨Seek medical care immediately if you notice:
• Rapid or labored breathing
• Skin pulling in around the ribs or neck (retractions)
• Bluish lips or fingertips
• Difficulty feeding or signs of dehydration
• Extreme fatigue or difficulty waking
The good news is that most children recover well with supportive care, though symptoms like cough can sometimes linger for a couple of weeks.
If your child is struggling with symptoms or you’re concerned about their breathing, we’re always here to help evaluate and guide you.
We’re thinking about all the families navigating RSV right now — it can be stressful, but you’re not alone. 💙
